Experience the thrill of stadium jumping and cross‑country all in one derby-style competition. Whether you're a seasoned rider or a passionate spectator, the HPNJ Eventing Derby offers a fun and welcoming atmosphere for all.

What is an Eventing Derby?  The Eventing Derby  is a course consisting of a combination of stadium jumps and cross country jumps along a single route – all in the rings on our all- weather courses.   

Event Details

• Date: Saturday, April 18^th, 2026
• Location: Horse Park of New Jersey
• Divisions: Pre-Starter through Novice Level
• Fee:  $65 for one round or $100 for two rounds. Horse/Rider combination can compete at 2 different levels.

What to Expect

• A combined course of stadium and cross country jumps spreading through two outdoor rings.
• Professional judging and safe, well-designed course consisting of 12 – 18 obstacles
• Supportive environment for riders of all levels beginning the day with the lowest division and progressing to allow competitors to move up a level.

Divisions  and Times Offered:

• ·       Pre-Starter (X rails to 2 feet max):  8:00 am to 9:45 am
• ·       Starter (2’ to 2’3”):  10:00 am to 11:45 am
• ·       Beginner Novice (2’3” to 2’7”):  12:00 noon to 1:45 pm
• ·       Novice (2’7” to 2’ 11”):  2:00 pm to 3:30 pm

Eventing Derby Rules

• Riders with the lowest time receive the highest placing.  Jump penalties are converted to time penalties and added to the overall time to determine Division placement.  Penalties earned (ie., faults, refusals etc.) will be converted to time penalties as follows:

• Time starts/ends when horse and rider go through the start/finish flags.  Judge will signal via whistle for horse/rider to begin.
• Elimination will be earned for the following: 
• • Missing a fence/going “off course”
  •  4 total refusals on the whole course
  • 3 refusals on same fence, leaving the arena
  • Not going through start/finish flags
  • Unauthorized assistance
  • Fall of competitor or horse.
• Any actions/events involving horse, rider or other persons not addressed above are understood to be governed by the 2025 USEF eventing rules.  HPNJ Eventing Derby will follow the USEF for Cross Country including tack, dress and rules. 
• Entries must include Coggins within 1 year,  EHV-1 vaccine within 6 months, and full payment prior to ride-time.
• Bridle Number must be worn by horse at all times.  Protective headgear must be worn at all times.  Safety vests are encouraged but not required. 
• Non-competing/Schooling horses are welcomed in Schooling/Warmup rings only for a $25.00 fee paid to Show Secretary.

Awards : 10 Ribbons awarded per Division.  Ties will remain.
